Idris Elba recently spoke with the press about his role in Beast. “We had to try to make this feel as real as possible,” the actor shared. “We flew out into the middle of South Africa, into the wilderness. And we had less, so we consumed less, our minds were sharp, we worked hard,” Idris told media. “It was lots of rehearsal,” the actor further revealed. “It was a small, tight crew, but we really worked as a family.”

Much of Elba’s skills as a dad onscreen came from his real-life experience as a father. “The best thing to do is just be able to listen to your children, and they’ll tell you what they’re feeling and thinking,” Idris said of his parenting philosophy. “And the only way to connect to them is by listening,” he further explained. “And when they allow you to speak, then you speak.”

Beast comes to theaters on Friday, August 19, 2022.
